📜 Social & Cultural History

Nestled between the Western Ghats' northern and southern hill ranges, this region was historically known as "Naduvattam" during the 18th century. It originally formed part of the Tarur Swarupam kingdom and later came under the rule of the Zamorin of Calicut, becoming one of the twenty-two villages of the historic Naduvattam region.

The name "Kuthannur" is believed to have originated either from "Koothinte Eetillam" (the cradle of performing arts) or from the title "Kuthan", once associated with the Vaishya community. Historians also believe that Kuthannur flourished as an important centre of trade and performing arts in ancient times.

The region has a remarkable legacy of folk traditions including Kanyarkali, Tholpavakoothu (Shadow Puppet Theatre), traditional folk songs, and heroic ballads. It has also produced several renowned Kathakali artists such as Kuthannur Itheerippanikkar, Dashamukhan Shankupanikkar, Tholannur Eechara Menon, Azhakankumarath Madhavan Nair, Areekkat Veettil Kittunni Menon, and Kuthannur Karunakara Panikkar, whose contributions remain a source of pride for the region.

🌾 Agricultural Heritage

Agriculture has always been the backbone of Kuthannur's economy. The farming community experienced several transformations over the years, including the hardships of the traditional feudal (Janmi) system.

A major turning point came in 1956 with the commissioning of the Malampuzha Dam, which significantly improved irrigation facilities and enabled farmers to cultivate up to three crop seasons annually.

🎭 Cultural Heritage

Kuthannur is widely recognised as a land of rich artistic and ritual traditions. It has played an important role in preserving and promoting classical and folk art forms such as Tholpavakoothu, Ezham Moorthi Kali, and Krishnanattam.

For generations, the masters (Ashans) of Krishnanattam have belonged to Kuthannur. The famous traditional magician Thelan of Tholannur was also a native of this region.

The modern Panchayat administrative system was formally established in 1962.
